Bulletin · Oct 29, 4:05 PM · Intel 8-K

Intel Q3: earnings per share $0.52. Q4 outlook: $0.25, gross margin 38.0% (Q3: 44.1%).

Ch

Chips · Oct 30, 4:30 PM Beta

Intel is down 28.6% to $65.76. SMH fell 7.0% and AMD 10.9% the same day, and Intel usually moves 1.9 times SMH, so about 13 of the 28.6 points are the sector. The other 15 are Intel’s own outlook.

The 10-Q is more mixed than the price. Data-center operating margin is 41.5%, up from 23.4% a year ago, on 78% more revenue. PC revenue fell 5%, and Intel expects it worse through 2027.

Next: Q4 gross margin against 38.0%, and whether server growth is volume or price.

Va

Valuation · 4:34 PM

The price fell 28.6%, but the earnings outlook fell 52%. The same price reads two ways, depending on which quarter you trust:

  • Per share, a yearPrice to earnings
  • Q4 outlook ×4$1.0066×
  • Q3 pace ×4$2.0832×

Which is right depends on whether Q4 is a dip or the new level. A data-center margin that holds at 41.5% leans toward 32×; PC margins that keep falling, toward 66×.

Price: inmoney-data, Oct 30. Earnings: Intel 8-K. Multiples are computed, one quarter ×4.

Ch

Chips · 4:38 PM

Which part of the business is the bad news? Not data centers: operating profit is $3.0B, up from $1.0B. PCs: revenue −5%, operating profit −15%. Foundry still lost $1.9B in the quarter, down from $2.3B.

Data-center growth is mostly price and mix. Server average price rose 54%; volume rose 10%. Intel says most of the price rise is a richer mix of high-end chips; price increases to cover higher costs are the smaller part.

SEC 10-Q, Oct 30. Margin and sector share computed from these and price data.

Ch

Chips · 4:40 PM

Why is next quarter’s outlook so low?

  • PC demand is falling because memory is expensive. Intel expects it worse in Q4 and lasting through 2027.
  • Shortages of packaging parts cap data-center chip shipments into next year.
  • A factory in Israel stopped for about two weeks in October. Q4 takes the scrapped stock and idle-plant costs.

Only the third has an end date: Intel says the plant restarts by the end of October. Why the sector fell is not in our data. Source: SEC 10-Q, Oct 30.

Fi

At what price did others recently buy? On Aug 12 Intel sold about 242 million new shares for $22.6B, around $93 each, 42% above today. The CEO bought $10M on Aug 11 at $95. Insiders sold $7.5M over twelve months (two people); there is no cluster of buying.

Implied volatility is 72.7% for the expiry a week out and 56.6% for eleven weeks out, so the near term is priced rougher: about ±10% over a week. Before the report, the biggest open-interest builds sat about 14% above the price ($105 calls) and 13% below it ($80 puts).

Open interest counts contracts. It cannot tell who holds which side. Options data, Oct 30.

You · 4:48 PM

Is the data-center part strong enough to carry it?

Va

Valuation · 4:49 PM

It is the strongest part, but the outlook still cuts earnings per share by 52% ($0.52 to $0.25), with data centers at $3.0B of operating profit this quarter. Intel says inference demand is rising, but gives no figure, so I leave it out. I changed your Intel research. It now says: Q3 beat Intel’s own guidance, but the Q4 outlook steps down. The case now leans on 2027.

The balance sheet is not the problem: cash and investments are $54.0B against $50.1B of debt. The share count is 11% above last year, so each share earns less.

What settles it: Q4 gross margin against the 38.0% outlook, server volume growth against price, and whether PC demand turns in the first half of 2027.

Lilly: can volume keep outrunning price cuts?

Version 4

Volume growth is outrunning price cuts.

Still true, but $900M of Q3 revenue came from milestones and rebate adjustments.

  • Revenue
    $24.4B, consensus $22.6B
  • Volume, price

    $91.0–92.0B
  • Close
    $1,288.30 Oct 28 → $1,373.70 Oct 29

Why I rewrote it

Take out the $900M and revenue still clears consensus by about $0.9B, so demand is not in doubt. But $410M of it was the last Jardiance milestone, and none remain, so 2027 starts without it.

Would change my view

Price falling faster than volume grows. Outside the US, the 29% drop came with Mounjaro joining China’s reimbursement list, so that is the line I’ll watch next quarter.

Va

Valuation · 4:32 pm

The stock rose 6.6% today, so some of this is already paid for. The $35.00–36.00 EPS outlook includes a $4.57 charge for deals, which makes the headline number look lower than the business. I’m redoing my numbers without it.

  • Microsoft, read, no new version. Azure grew 48% and commercial backlog reached $677B, both in line with your research. The stock fell 0.2%.

Valuation · 8:23 am

Not yet, but your case says AWS pays for itself, and today it doesn’t. Spending on property and equipment rose $94.8B in a year, while operating cash flow grew 29% to $168.3B. Amazon still expects about $220B of capital spending in 2026. I’ve added cash flow to what I watch and will post again if that number rises.

Ch

Chips · 8:15 am

Intel guided Q4 revenue to $15.0–16.0B against $17.1B expected, and says PC weakness runs through the first half of 2027. AMD is far less exposed: PCs are under a quarter of its revenue, and Data Center grew 107% last quarter. Intel’s news reaches AMD’s price before AMD speaks, but your research stands. Watch set for Tuesday’s report.

Ch

Chips · 4:05 pm

AMD closed at $504.80, down 10.9% on twice its normal volume. Intel fell 28.6% and the main chip index 7.2%. This was a sector selloff, not AMD news: AMD filed nothing today. The Tuesday watch stands.

What this call needs
